Cameron Road’s transformation into a multi-modal corridor is taking shape with some sections of the 3.2km construction project nearing completion. Cameron Road provides a key ‘place’ and ‘link’ function for the city, connecting the southern and western suburbs to the CBD, Tauranga Hospital and various schools along the Te Papa peninsula.

Vitruvius is proud to have lead the delivery of the project since central governments contribution to Tauranga City Council (TCC) through the Crown Infrastructure Partners COVID response funding in late 2021. The strategic function and vision set by TCC and SmartGrowth Partners within the Urban Forum and Transport Initiative is now coming to life.

The multi-modal transformation will make Cameron Road safer, more attractive, and provide more ways to move. The changes include a new bi-directional cycleway, peak hour bus lanes, bus priority measures, safer intersections, accessibility improvements, stormwater quality treatment, native plantings and trees, and new streetscape features. The urban design outcomes have been developed in partnership with mana whenua with a strong recognition of the history of Te Papa.

Vitruvius Business Leader and Director Scott Williamson says it’s a privilege to have been entrusted by TCC to lead the delivery from procurement through to construction. As the project has moved into the delivery phase, Scott’s focus has moved towards assurance and chairing the Project Control Group to support the design and construction teams. This is to deliver the outcomes to the community, on time, in budget, and with a strong focus on safety and minimising disruption to businesses and daily users of the corridor.

Over the next few months, locals will notice more progress as the Cameron Road Joint Venture team commence further underground works such as wastewater pipe upgrades, service diversions, and new stormwater infrastructure. New signalised intersections and mid block crossings will get underway later this year and construction is due for completion in late 2023.

By Neil Mason

10 years ago, I planned a leap of faith with a step into the NZ marketplace on my own. In June 2012 Vitruvius Limited was born in a small office at the bottom of our garden. The company philosophy back then was that good business could be done by developing close, trusted relationships and partnerships. To this day I have maintained the vision that if you like who you work with, you will work hard to deliver the best possible results. The commitment is to the relationship and the individuals just as much as the deliverables or the project.

In July 2012, with a robust business plan tucked under my arm and the support of my wife and family, I took that leap of faith. Everyone knew it was going to take focus, hard work and commitment but I hugely underestimated one particular element; I didn’t realise the scale of support that I had from my friends and close clients.

A business is nothing without clients and I underestimated how many of those clients had become friends. These are the industry colleagues who wanted me to succeed almost as much as I did. These close clients have played a formidable part in the success of Vitruvius and for that I am truly grateful.

Over the past 10 years I have learned to use the same principle when recruiting and growing our capability. It makes sense to me that if you like who you work with, and who you work for, you will like where you work. When new team members join us, they enlist on the Vitruvius journey,

I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to my family, partners, employees, friends, and close clients. It turns out you are all in the same exclusive club whether you like it or not. That is a member of the Vitruvius family. Together we have all made a roaring success off the back of a simple philosophy: relationships matter.

Thank you for the last 10 years. Hurry up and carry on, the journey is still going strong!

The decision to expand and set up our third operating centre in Auckland in the middle of 2021 has proven to be every ounce of success.

Whilst the strategy was sound, the success has been made through the team that have joined and led on this plan. The drive to set up a local office in Auckland was around having the presence to better support and deliver for our clients, living and breathing their challenges and being able to build personal relationships.

The first success for Vitruvius in Auckland was the affirmation of being able to attract high calibre talent who are successful in their own right. Inducting the team into the Vitruvius culture and ways of working has enabled the team to develop their own successes, build and foster their own relationships and now be delivering on their own projects.

The Auckland team have been operating for six months, the team have grown to 5 credible and valuable team members with more talent on the way in the coming months.

Amongst other projects that the team are delivering on, Bradley Jones, Auckland Business Leader, has been working on long term key infrastructure projects for KiwiRail (including the City Rail Link) and supporting several contractors in the road and rail sectors.. Louise Baker, Technical Director, has been working with Auckland Transport, Waka Kotahi and Bay of Plenty Regional Council on Travel Demand Management, other initiatives to support the climate emissions reduction plan and setting up Project Controls systems.

The diversity the team brings further builds on the value offered by Vitruvius as a well-rounded, pragmatic and delivery focused team, brave enough to take on a challenge whilst enjoying every adventure.

One of our Vitruvius values is ‘continually improving’ which we believe all starts with self-leadership. Having the courage and passion to continually strive to do better and taking a lead role to develop and own the change. Leadership doesn’t start at a certain grade or managerial position. We look to all of our team members to take a leadership role within their sphere of influence

One way Vitruvius invests in our employee’s is through the opportunity to undertake a 3 day leadership course with Whakaaro. Whakaaro’s leadership course delivered to Vitruvius is a bespoke program which focuses on development of the whole individual, encompassing their approach to life, work, and whānau, and ultimately enabling their own self-directed leadership journey to unfold.

This program is lead for Vitruvius by Reuben Araroa, the Founder and Director of Whakaaro Inc. Reuben’s knowledge, approach and delivery is clearly demonstrated by his own success and influenced through the power of storytelling, which is a key tool that is taught through the program.

The program explores the range of different behavioral leadership styles and the application of these styles to the individual situation. Through understanding your own power of influence and how that influence is a life skill that has the ability to impact and inspire others.

The journey is ongoing, the suitcase of skills and tools that is provided, as well as the connection and vulnerability with the group that undertakes the course together, sets our team up to continually practice and implement a structured approach for self leadership.

If you are interested to hear more, please feel free to contact our General Manager, Kim Brown for her experience or contact Whakaaro directly.
