Building our future, Cameron Road, Te Papa, Tauranga

Cameron Road’s transformation into a multi-modal corridor is taking shape with some sections of the 3.2km construction project nearing completion. Cameron Road provides a key ‘place’ and ‘link’ function for the city, connecting the southern and western suburbs to the CBD, Tauranga Hospital and various schools along the Te Papa peninsula.

Vitruvius is proud to have lead the delivery of the project since central governments contribution to Tauranga City Council (TCC) through the Crown Infrastructure Partners COVID response funding in late 2021. The strategic function and vision set by TCC and SmartGrowth Partners within the Urban Forum and Transport Initiative is now coming to life.

The multi-modal transformation will make Cameron Road safer, more attractive, and provide more ways to move. The changes include a new bi-directional cycleway, peak hour bus lanes, bus priority measures, safer intersections, accessibility improvements, stormwater quality treatment, native plantings and trees, and new streetscape features. The urban design outcomes have been developed in partnership with mana whenua with a strong recognition of the history of Te Papa.

Vitruvius Business Leader and Director Scott Williamson says it’s a privilege to have been entrusted by TCC to lead the delivery from procurement through to construction. As the project has moved into the delivery phase, Scott’s focus has moved towards assurance and chairing the Project Control Group to support the design and construction teams.  This is to deliver the outcomes to the community, on time, in budget, and with a strong focus on safety and minimising disruption to businesses and daily users of the corridor.

Over the next few months, locals will notice more progress as the Cameron Road Joint Venture team commence further underground works such as wastewater pipe upgrades, service diversions, and new stormwater infrastructure.  New signalised intersections and mid block crossings will get underway later this year and construction is due for completion in late 2023.
