About the Role
Looking to join a team delivering complex projects that really matter? Vitruvius is growing its Rail team, and we are looking for an Intermediate Rail Engineer ready to step up and take ownership of complex, real-world projects.
You will work across the full project lifecycle, from early-stage planning through to detailed design and construction support, contributing to projects that keep Aotearoa moving. Track alignments, rail tunnels, level crossings, rail bridges, stations/platforms, stabling yards, track drainage and culverts are just some of what you will work on.
You will be a member of multidisciplinary teams, working closely with our clients to deliver practical, buildable outcomes.
What You Will Do
As an Intermediate Rail Engineer, you will:
- Deliver technical assessments, analysis, and design outputs on rail infrastructure projects across civil, structures or transport disciplines
- Apply sound engineering judgement to develop safe, practical, and buildable solutions.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to support integrated and efficient project delivery.
- Undertake site visits, investigations, and provide construction phase support where needed.
- Prepare clear, accurate, and fit-for-purpose technical documentation.
- Support project delivery across scope, programme, budget, risk, and quality requirements.
- Flag issues early, communicate clearly, and keep delivery moving.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
What You Will Bring to Vitruvius
Essential:
- 4+ years’ experience in civil infrastructure, transport, structures or rail engineering.
- Experience in civil or structural engineering works.
- Understanding of how projects move from concept through construction.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and take ownership of your work.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and within a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Relevant engineering degree (Civil, Structural, or Rail) or equivalent experience.
- High level of computer literacy across core tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Full driver’s licence.
Bonus Points For:
- Experience in rail engineering or rail-related infrastructure projects.
- Structural design experience.
- Experience working on ‘block of line’ or live rail environments.
- Experience in New Zealand and/or consultancy environments.
- Understanding of construction quality assurance processes (e.g. MSQA).
- Familiarity with digital tools, data, and emerging technologies to improve project delivery.
