Graduate Civil Engineer

Tauranga

About the Role

Are you ready to start your engineering career with work that genuinely matters to communities across Aotearoa?

Vitruvius is looking for a Graduate Civil Engineer to join our Tauranga team and support the delivery of civil infrastructure projects across transport, land development, water and rail.

This is a hands-on graduate role where you’ll work across a broad range of projects and disciplines, gaining exposure to transport, land development, water and rail sectors. You’ll work across the full project lifecycle, from planning and investigation through to design and delivery.

Unlike many larger consultancies, you’ll be encouraged to contribute from day one, gaining exposure to clients, project delivery and technical decision-making much earlier in your career. You’ll be given meaningful responsibility early, working directly alongside experienced engineers, technical experts and business leaders who will support your development and progression toward Chartership.

What You Will Do

As a Graduate Civil Engineer, you will:

  • Support the delivery of civil infrastructure projects across transport, land development, water and rail sectors.
  • Assist with engineering assessments, investigations, calculations, design work and technical documentation.
  • Participate in site visits, field investigations and construction observations.
  • Build capability in design software, modelling tools, GIS systems and engineering processes.
  • Work alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists to develop your skills and progress toward Chartership.
  • Participate in client meetings, workshops and project discussions where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across offices and disciplines to deliver successful project outcomes.

Why Join Vitruvius?

  • Work across transport, land development, water and rail projects from the start of your career.
  • Gain meaningful responsibility and project involvement earlier than is typical in larger consultancies.
  • Learn directly from experienced engineers, including Chartered Professional Engineers and recognised technical leaders.
  • Be part of a supportive and approachable team where learning is encouraged, questions are welcomed, and every team member is respected regardless of their level of experience.
  • Participate in client meetings, site visits, workshops and project delivery from an early stage of your career.
  • Build the experience and competencies required for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) registration.
  • Join a growing Tauranga team that combines the support and culture of a close-knit office with the opportunities of a national consultancy.
  • Help deliver projects that make a positive impact on communities across New Zealand.

What You Will Bring to Vitruvius

Essential Experience and Skills:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources, or a Washington Accord equivalent qualification.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer literacy and a willingness to embrace new technologies, digital tools and AI.
  • A genuine interest in learning, professional development and progressing toward Chartership.
  • Initiative, curiosity, and confidence to ask questions and seek feedback.

Bonus Points For:

  • Previous engineering or consultancy work experience.
  • Experience using 12D, Civil 3D, Revit, AutoCAD or ArcGIS.
  • An understanding of New Zealand engineering standards and industry practices.
  • Leadership, volunteering or extracurricular experience.

What Makes This Role Special

Broad Project Exposure. You’ll gain experience across transport, land development, water and rail projects, giving you the opportunity to explore different civil engineering disciplines and build a broad technical foundation.

Early Responsibility. Rather than sitting on the sidelines, you’ll be integrated into project teams from day one and encouraged to ask questions, contribute ideas and take ownership of meaningful project tasks.

Structured Growth. You’ll receive mentoring and coaching from experienced engineers, including Chartered Professional Civil and Water Engineers, while gaining the practical experience required to progress toward CPEng status.

Access to Senior Expertise. As part of a smaller consultancy, you’ll work directly alongside Senior Engineers, Technical Leaders and Business Leaders, with access to a level of guidance and project exposure that can be difficult to achieve in larger organisations.

A Connected National Team. You’ll join a multidisciplinary engineering team delivering infrastructure projects across New Zealand, with regular opportunities to connect, share knowledge and learn from colleagues across offices and disciplines.

Ready to Get Started?

This is an opportunity to build a broad foundation in civil engineering while contributing to projects that make a real difference across New Zealand.
