About the Role
Vitruvius is looking for a Senior Civil Designer who is ready to lead from the front by delivering excellence and high-quality designs. This is a hands-on technical role at the centre of our Transport team. You will be someone who is experienced at owning and delivering design packages, guiding engineers, and building the kind of trusted client relationships that generate the next project.
You will lead civil design delivery across earthworks, transport, and general civil infrastructure to NZ specifications, working across the full project lifecycle from concept through to construction.
You will assist to shape our future offering and design and digital delivery as we enter the new world of AI. You will play a visible leadership role in health, safety, and quality. What You Will Do
- Lead and deliver design packages across earthworks, transport, and general civil disciplines to NZ specifications.
- Act as technical verifier for others’ work within Civil Engineering.
- Apply and direct engineering principles, exercising judgement in the selection and adaptation of standard and complex techniques.
- Manage site survey, fieldwork, and quality assurance aspects of civil projects.
- Work collaboratively with Project Leaders and stakeholders to drive project deliverables through to completion.
- Manage internal and external approvals and resolve or escalate issues promptly.
- Maintain strong client relationships and represent Vitruvius professionally at every touchpoint.
- Contribute to business development by identifying and supporting an active pipeline of work.
- Promote and lead visible health, safety, and quality behaviours on every project.
What You Will Bring to Vitruvius
Essential:
- 5+ years of experience in civil engineering design.
- Proficiency in NZ-recognised civil design software — OpenRoads, Civil 3D or 12D.
- Broad theoretical knowledge of civil engineering and interdependencies across disciplines.
- Experience leading and working within project teams.
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
- Commercial acumen and experience applying it to project delivery.
- Knowledge of construction operations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Full driver’s licence and high-level computer literacy.
- Understanding of responsibilities under the HSE Act 2015.
Bonus Points For:
- 10+ years of civil engineering project experience.
- Complex or multi-discipline design experience.
- Expertise in road and land development design.
- Proficiency in OpenRoad, InfraWorks, and/or Revit.
- Ability to interpret investigation outputs and propose corrective actions.
- Washington Accord degree qualification in Engineering.
- Certificate in HSE management.
