Transport Engineer

Wellington - Te Whanganui-a-Tara

About the Role

Vitruvius is looking for a Transport Project Engineer who can bring technical judgement, delivery discipline and a practical mindset to transport and civil infrastructure projects across Wellington and the lower North Island.

This is a role for an engineer who is ready to take ownership. You will lead defined workstreams and appropriately sized projects, build trusted client relationships and help strengthen our transport capability in Wellington. Your work may span roads and highways, urban corridors, walking and cycling infrastructure, and selected civil and rail opportunities.

You will have room to make decisions, solve problems and influence how projects are delivered, with the support of experienced people around you when you need it.

What You Will Do

As a Transport Engineer, you will:

  • Deliver technical assessments, analysis and design outputs for transport and civil infrastructure projects.
  • Develop practical, safe and buildable solutions that meet project requirements.
  • Take ownership of defined projects or workstreams across scope, programme, budget, risk and quality.
  • Lead day-to-day delivery activities, including work planning, progress monitoring, risk management, quality checks, client updates and commercial tracking.
  • Coordinate across disciplines to achieve integrated design and efficient delivery outcomes.
  • Undertake site assessments, field investigations, construction monitoring and technical support.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation, drawings, reports, specifications and project records.
  • Represent Vitruvius in client meetings, workshops, site discussions and project updates.
  • Contribute to project proposals, scopes, methodologies, programmes and estimates.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, contractors, regulators and project stakeholders through responsive communication and reliable delivery.

What You Will Bring to Vitruvius

Essential:

  • Around five or more years of experience in transport and civil infrastructure.
  • Experience delivering highways, road corridor, transport or civil infrastructure projects, ideally within urban environments.
  • An understanding of the full project lifecycle, including design and construction-phase delivery.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Confidence in client-facing environments, including coordinating projects, running meetings and maintaining regular client communication.
  • The ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and take ownership of delivery outcomes.
  • A technical degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience with a strong transport, highways or civil infrastructure focus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A full driver licence

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience in construction management.
  • Experience with walking and cycling, public transport priority, road safety, active modes or integrated corridor projects.
  • Wellington transport project experience and existing relationships within the local infrastructure sector.
  • A practical understanding of project scope, programme, budget, risk and change.
  • Experience contributing to proposals, methodologies or project estimates.
  • Knowledge of transport design guidance, constructability, temporary traffic management interfaces or urban corridor design.
  • Capability in relevant modelling, design, documentation or CAD software.

You do not need to arrive knowing everything. You do need to be credible, curious, and prepared to take responsibility for the quality of your work.
